Case StudY: Jupiter Aluminum Corp

In November 2006, Jupiter Aluminum Corporation in Hammond, Indiana, an aluminum processing mill, suffered a seven-alarm fire that destroyed the main manufacturing facility and caused catastrophic damage to the hot and cold rolling aluminum lines and ancillary production machinery. Equipment not subjected to thermal (fire and heat) effects suffered damage from the cumulative detrimental effects of smoke, soot, and water from the fire-fighting efforts.

Continental Machinery was engaged to provide damage assessment, scope of repairs, valuation, and consulting services. CMC compiled an exhaustive inventory of all damages to the building and its equipment, and then valued each line item in a comprehensive loss determination report. Extensive work product including photographic loss documentation, CAD drawings and third-party consulting opinions on contentious structural and metallurgical issues, was generated by Continental to facilitate Jupiter’s financial recovery.

Continental personnel provided continuous support during Jupiter’s extensive mediation hearings with the insurance carrier. In December 2008, Jupiter Aluminum Corp. successfully settled its insurance claim after four months of mediation sessions.
